Volleyball Rules

Game play rules:
  1. First of all, have fun! These leagues were created to be social, fun, and recreational in nature. Therefore, aggressive or confrontational behavior will not be tolerated. If there is a dispute, replay a point or notify a volleyball coordinator. Management has the final authority on all disputes.
  2. Seriously – just have a good time in our leagues. Play in the sand, soak up the Buckeye Lake vibe, maybe even consume a cocktail or two. Relax, be yourself, and play some volleyball!
  3. Service:
    1. Each member of a team shall rotate clockwise for service.
    2. Server must hit the ball with both feet behind the end line.
    3. Returning team may not spike/block a serve return.
    4. Serves that hit the net and go over are considered “legal.”
    5. No player may serve twice in a row after the other team has sided out their first serve, you must plan your substitutions accordingly.
    6. Substitutions can only be made in positions that are next to a boundary line.
    7. Substitutions must be made at the same spot designated by what position on the court that you make your first substitution.
  4. Other game rules:
    1. Each team may hit a ball 3 times before the ball is hit to the opposing team (Duh!).
    2. Touching a ball (other than a block) is considered a hit.
    3. A ball is “in-play” until it touches the ground or hits an out of bounds object.
    4. Two players touching a ball at the same time counts as one “hit” and either may return hit it again.
    5. Don’t scoop, lift, or throw the ball.
    6. The ball can contact any part of your body and count as a hit but must only contact one part of your body or multiple parts simultaneously to be considered a legal contact.
  5. Net rules:
    1. Touch the net? Lose the point.
    2. Spikers may cross the “net-line” with a follow through but not touch the net.
    3. Blockers may not reach over the net and contact the ball before the hitter has had their chance to contact the ball unless any part of the ball is directly above the net (plane).
    4. Players may cross the net-line under the net unless it interferes with the opposing team's play.
  6. Disputes: In the case of an honest dispute – REPLAY THE POINT!
Roster rules
  1. All games are “Co-ed 6s” meaning up to six players on the court at one time (3 male maximum).
  2. Minimum 4 players on the Court at one time. (example: 3 male, 1 female; 2 male, 2 female; 1 male, 3 female; etc.).
    1. Maximum 3 men on the court at one time.
    2. Must start game on-time if the minimum number of players are present.
  3. All players on a roster (or playing in a game) must sign a waiver.
  4. Your team forfeits if less than 4 players are present for a team. You still may play an “exhibition match” but it will be a loss for the understaffed team. Unless the other team captain agrees that the number of participants you have is okay...if they don’t care, we don’t care!
  5. Management reserves the right to ask a team to change their name if it’s overly offensive or inappropriate. If teams have the same or similar names, then the captain's last name will be applied to their team name.
  6. Papa Boo's Volleyball does not demand rosters, nor do we check the ones that are submitted. All players are permitted to play at any time as long as they have filled out a waiver before they play.
  7. ANY PLAYER TAKING THE COURT SHALL BE DEEMED TO HAVE ASSUMED ALL RISK OF INJURY/DAMAGE FROM PLAYING OR WATCHING MATCHES.
Rain/Holiday Policy
  1. Rain Policy
    1. We never cancel a match or night for rain prior to the scheduled start time.
  2. Holiday Policy -We never postpone league for holidays (4 th of July, Memorial Day, etc.)
    1. You are free to reschedule.
  3. It is the responsibility of the captains to reschedule a match in the event of rain/holiday.
  4. In the event one team shows up and the other doesn’t – the “no-show” team will receive a loss.
  5. Email emilee@papaboos.com if both captains agree to reschedule.
Rescheduling policy
  1. Any match not played before tournament week is considered a forfeit and each team will only receive 1 win a piece.
  2. Suggestions for rescheduling: We have the court ready for play beginning at 6:00 pm each day and you can always play after league play is complete for the day.
  3. You must be off a court in time for the next scheduled match on that court – Do NOT schedule a make-up match on a court where a regularly scheduled game is to take place.
  4. All rescheduled games played on another league night are 15-point (rally scoring) sets, as opposed to the normal 21 point matches – only in the event that a full hour or night of play is canceled. This will enable us to complete make up games faster.
  5. You can also agree to play just one set, with the winner getting 2 “wins” for the match, and the loser getting one “win”. (example: 1 game to 30 win by 2; 1 game to 21 win by 2; 1 game to 15 straight: etc.).
Match rules:
  1. Each match begins on the hour. Teams not present by :10 after the hour shall be considered to forfeit. This is a hard and fast rule. Volleyball staff is instructed to declare a forfeit at :10 after the hour.
  2. You must start the match once the minimum number of players are present.
  3. Each match is 3 sets, rally scoring (1-hour max). All sets are played to 21, win by 2, capped at 25.
  4. Each set “counts”, so play all three.
  5. Management reserves the right to have each match in the tournament (except the final match) be one set. Final matches will always be best of 3 with the winner being the first team to get 2 wins.
